The new company will be comprised of students who will spend the coming school year developing their dance technique and artistry. We will offer them intensive training in ballet, jazz and contemporary dance. This will help them develop into strong, well-rounded performers. In the 2015/2016 season, our studio will launch a new competition team made up of company members.
Students in the company will improve their skills by attending five required classes per week. They will take two ballet classes to strengthen them and to provide them with the foundation necessary to excel at any other dance style. This year, we will be welcoming new ballet teacher Denise LaPointe to our faculty and she is looking forward to training our students. Like our veteran teacher Bill Walldinger, Denise has enjoyed an accomplished career in jazz and musical theater, performing in touring companies with hit shows such as A Chorus Line and West Side Story just to name a few. She comes to us highly qualified to train our students in the rigors of ballet, because no jazz dancer can succeed in the professional world without strong ballet technique.
No matter what style of dance a student chooses to perform, the exercises of ballet class will teach them the proper way to lengthen the legs, to strengthen the core muscles and to protect the back. It will help the dancer develop flexibility, agility, musicality, and a beautiful quality of movement, whether it be quick and precise or slow and lyrical. Ballet training will greatly reduce the risk of injury to any dancer who pursues any other style of dance. It will also help any student improve in sports outside of the studio. Many professional athletes study ballet to improve their performance on the court or field, especially when it comes to leaping to make a catch, or developing longer "hang time" to sink a basket.
Students in the company will also be required to take a weekly class in jazz, contemporary, and stretch and turn. The stretch and turn class will be given free of charge to company members, and will teach them the groundwork necessary to execute dazzling turns, leaps and tricks -- the kind that we all love to see performed on stage.
The long term focused training program for students in the Hamilton Dance Company will also prepare them to have the skills necessary to audition for the performing arts high schools.
Membership in this company will be open to all students for a limited time. In future, new members will be accepted by invitation only.
We are also excited to tell you about our move down the block to our new studio!
Our studio is located at 11 Newell Street, across the street from St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Academy. Our fully renovated space contains two large studios. This will allow us to offer more classes and a more balanced curriculum. We are located at street level and our space is fully air-conditioned. We have sprung wood floors in our studios, which will reduce the stress on the students’ joints, and which will produce great sound for our tap dancers. The place looks great and we can’t wait to welcome all of you!!
